  • We follow the chronology of ANA's decision to not speak out on behalf of a candidate in the 2020 Presidential Election;
  • We meet the nurse who briefly had a high media profile, from speaking at a national convention to making headlines for shooting a woman in the stomach #NursesVote;
  • We see how a group of eight (8) nurses celebrated FN's 200th birthday in the early weeks of the novel coronavirus pandemic;
  • We hear a Black man speak out against racism on behalf of an organization whose membership is overwhelmingly white women;
  • We learn what ANA wants most

  1. Describe the standard of care that must be breached in order for a jury to find a defendant guilty of criminal negligence
  2. List the outcomes of each pathway in the just culture algorithm
  3. Identify 5 characteristics (values) that are promoted in a just culture

Episode Summary

  • We read Mrs Charlene Murphey's obituary;
  • We look at responses to Mrs Murphey's death by prominent nurses and nursing organizations;
  • We learn the facts of Mrs Murphey’s death, along with the requirements for each of the two (2) guilty verdicts (gross neglect of an impaired adult and negligent homicide)
  • We apply a standard just culture algorithm to the facts of the case

Questions for Discussion

  • Have you ever attended the funeral of someone you cared for as a patient? If so, why?
  • Discuss your experience of ‘just culture’ - learning, promoting, implementing, etc.
  • Discuss the tension between just culture and lateral violence (NIOSH Type III workplace violence)

  • We review portions of the medical record and quality reporting to learn about events as documented by the assigned night shift nurse (DonQuenick), attending physician and night shift charge nurse;
  • We review portions of a submission to the Colorado Dept of Public Health and Environment (DPHE) that a person responsible for crafting it later admitted included statements that were not true
  • We read an email chain among hospital executives expressing alarm at a protester holding a sign reading "Black Nurses Matter"
  • We learn what BOLO means

Questions for Discussion

  • Do you think the patient and his niece experienced a peaceful death? Why/why not?
  • Discuss the final stages of the dying process
  • How could this patient’s emergency hospitalization have been avoided?
  • Discuss the Defendants’ behaviors in the context of workplace violence
